Almost a week in, and it’s going great, there are ups and downs, but it’s mainly up so far. We have found everybody to be so friendly down here, whenever we go to farms to ask for work, even if they have no work, they forward us on to other farms, after a good long chat about life.
We did a bit of shopping in Kelowna the other day, so now Malcolm and I have queen size inflatable matresses, which makes a world of difference to a nights sleep. He also picked up a tent, giant six man that could double up as a garage for our car it’s so big! So now we use his other tent as a kitchen/pantry.
We stayed over Kelowna, taking the golf over a very bumpy road by a super rich part of town, but found a great place to camp overlooking the city, valley and lakes. And so we continue to live out in the kind of wild, out of cizilization. Now we are on a hill over looking Osoyoos. You could be forgiven for believing that we we by the Mediterranean here, it’s so beautiful, and mostly warm. This is supposed to be the hottest place in Canada, with record temperatures close to 50degrees!
Where we are camping is a hillside where fruit pickers are known to camp, we’ve picked a spot with a handful of English speakers, whereas across from us is an area with well over 150 French speakers. Apparently last year a forest fire started out from the camp across from us. The camp had been set up by the town to accommodate the pickers, but ended up costing the town around $100,000 to clean up an put out the fire. The french speakers have received the blame, resulting in quite a bit of racism toward the french canadians. However nobody gets any trouble up here. The only problem up here is the lack of running water, electricity and showers. But it’s a great life living away from everything, with such great views.
Yesterday we had a days work, piece work, a lovely had advertised in the job centre. So it was to be $40 for a line of peach and nectarine trees to be thinned. This should have taken one person 4 hours per line. Yet with her aiding the three of us it took almost four hours per line. So after being paid $140 for over ten hours work, we have worked our poorest days work. Thus we ended our working relationship as below $4 per hour is not worth it. We should spend our time looking for better work.
However we had a great day bonding. Nat and I have only known each other a couple of weeks and all three of us have much to learn from each other. We had great discussions about travelling, sex, food, cooking, friends, picking-up and life in general. I think that we are going to have a great time together this summer.
I’m going to get back into speaking French, as Nat can speak French French since she spent a couple of years in Meribel, which is great, and we can both teach Malcolm some French.
Each night we have a campfire, in a well built firepit surrounded by rocks, which we’ve cooked baked potatos, rice, falafal, quinoa, stuffed tomatos, eggs, toast and more on. It’s great, living out here, rent free is wonderful. It doesn’t hurt being so close to USA that we can see the border as supermarket prices are really low. It’s a shame my passport os en route from Banff, so we can’t go and see the states right now.
So it rained heavily last night, and my tent now has a couple of puddles inside, a $30 tent is expected to leak I guess but can I be expected to keep this tent if I am to live in it for four months? Maybe the rain is a freak thing. This is the wettest year ever around here, so maybe it’ll get back to normal and dry up, or maybe not. I also forgot to mention that I have bought a skateboard.
The day before leaving Banff, I emptied out my coin tin to count up $212 so with Malcolm being a great skater, it makes sense that if I’m not snowboarding, I can still be working on my riding in summer, so I have started learning to skate. Better late than never, how many people start skating at my age? Not many I think. I’ve had three days trying and it’s going well, so far I’m just working on my balance, but this should work great as training for winters, as well as keeping me active and fit! Bring on the grazed elbows.
Enjoy some photos (why exactly the upload has turned these upside down i have no clue, but i have things to do in town, so it will have to stay like that for now), and (no idea why they are so small, so something else to work on for next time!):

So I came so close to winning poker, second however is not winning. I think I needed more booze to keep it straight and level headed. Well €2 in no loss.
Yesterday I had a margerita, soo strong, only a swim in big waves to reduce it before dinner, geez looking after children is tiring. The drive back was late, long, fast, bumpy and fun.
I found a dead bat in the car. I drove 600km smoothly, found beaches, realised my phone won’t work, and spent time running around time trying to get a phone card.
I’m in a tent in st malo, beautiful, rightfully touristy town. It’s kind of like Dubrovnik in Croatia, just islands of castles. There’s even a diving board into a pool, that is hidden when the tide is up.
It’s super brittanic, I like, I’ll try and have a crepe tomorrow, I’ve never actually had one in britanny!
I saw alex earlier, recovering from the weekend. Then I spent the evening in the countriside playing poker, a nice frenchy evening, where I was branded as not English.
Maybe tomorrow I could be daring enough to dive off the high board into the pool by the sea?!?!

Today I’m couch surfing in Kerry.
Last night, agota, sebastien and I went out. Being that we started after midnight, we weren’t so drunk to dance to the cheese in the club until it was time to leave, so we had our own wake the house mates party, until seven am.
So today has been a little rough.
I said my goodbyes and drove off. It’s slow going on Irish roads, but I got to the gap of dunloe. It’s beauterific! I worry that I got a bit excited and damaged the underside of the car when we flew through the mountains, however much fun was had.
So now it’s rainy, foggy but not too cold, in cahersiveen. I’m staying with ciaran, a couch surfer, not like other couch surfers that I’ve met. He’s mid life, his wife and kids have just left him, he’s Irish, well travelled and has a huge beautiful house by the sea, and grows his own veg. We had great home made dinner, red wine, cool chats, then went to his sister’s pub. Even better, the next pub had an impromptu gathering of music, guitars, harmonica, fiddle…singing. Awesome.
Finally we did the responsible thing and cycled home in the rain, gees, I don’t know whether it was the booze but the km uphill almost killed me.
Well off to sleep to await the next adventures.

So after my stupidity of missing my train, i awoke at 5am, the first time of being awake that early since i would go to bed at that time ib winter. I caught a train to Barcelona airport, and caught my pla e on time. I had 45minutes in Paris, before catching a quick train down to Bordeaux(a convoluted route, but rapid and efficient), to enjoy the sun while I waited for alex after he knocked a guy into the ditch, then got lost. A tirin day, ended by hanging with his mates and siblings, but me too tired to speak French.
Said my good-Bye to alex over juice and off again.
Yesterday I drove up, pretty uneventful until I hit paris, which usually I avoid, but without map, driving alone, I let the gps do her job. It took me two hours to get around Paris, it Gould have been less than one. Je deteste la peripherique!
So to Amiens. I got here eventually. I tried contacting catherine earlier in the day, but got the number wrong. I met catherine in lacauno, in the campsite. But I got the number off my laptop, and she came to meet me. We walked through the pretty town, drank wine, when in France, then went to her friends party.
I’d met most of these guys already, and they were super drunk, entertaining, maybe embarressing for catherine.
I’m sleepy, in bed, chilled, happy.

So we spent a somewhat crazy, sleep deprived, drunk, hot, sunny, long weekend at the 24 hours of le Mans.
Friday we arrived at the city at about four, to congestion. All day we’d been seeing racy cars, and the reception was of no exception, Jérémy clarkson in a ferrari included. Tickets €25 each check, camping for group of six €49 check, so far so cheap. Off to the supermarket we fill a shopping trolley with booze. I made my concerns over the lack of alcahol known, but this and a bit of soup, cheese, and dried mash potato was to be our staple for 3-4 days.
So to the track, we missed our turn off and raced along the track, and back, before finding our campsite. We were late arrivals so camped so far from the action the field was relatively empty. Still a strange site it was to see fields of tents with porsches, ferraris, atoms, tvrs, kit cars, well every boys dream, all polished on show, and being covered in dust. Some people had been there since Monday so the piles of beer bottles/cans were already geting artful.
We throw up our tents and get drinking. A quick watch of some vintage cars on the track and back to eat mash and meet fellow campers. Some crazy French guys next to us, a bit of football, Dutch blowing up plant pots, some drunken joy rides and I woke up Saturday morning, just blurred memories.
The frencies passed me some whiskey, I have a beer, eau d’vie and pastiis, an go to watch the warm up. Then after some quick food I head to the track to watch the start at three pm. I was toasted but managed to find the Dunlop bridge. It was quite exciting, but the alcahol in my system, along with the fact that I was without my chums made it less that it could have been. Still it was awesome to see these cars that I’ve read about all of my life, and for the fast ones to lap the slower some after three or four laps. This a 13.6km track. These guys were doing 3:26 laps, averaging 180kmh!
So I wonder to the camp, nobody, walk to visage arnage, nobody, bus to musanne, I necked 2l of water an chill on the back watchin the race. There are so many amateur camera people going snap, snap, snap for every car.
Finally I found the guys back at camp, alex is put for the count. We stop by the track pay an extortionate price for a cold beer and watch the cars into the night. Dad said we’d never see a crash, but we did get to watch an audi take the corner too fast, and smash backwards into the tyre barrier. I think we left after midnight, for more madness in the campsite. So several joy rides on the van, some kebabs, close calls, but the sequrity loved us with their camera love, and again I wake up in a haze.
So I started Sunday off with no booze, and check that the cars are still going. Just an escape really, as how can I not tell, being camped in the track?
I suggested that we all pack up and drive to the mulsanne corner, to avoid the rush to leave at three.
So the peugots are in the top two, a mazda goes hard into the barriers, safety car out, an Aston blows up entering the pits. It was too hot and I almost pass put. For the last three laps the cars bunch together, peugots, corvettes, audis, ferraris etc. The race is for all intents over, peurgot hdi’s first and second and sixth, audi tdi third, Aston fourth, and lolo fifth.
I rooted for aston, being british, and audi because i’m an audi driver and born in Germany. So not a bad finish, allez les bleus!
So we got away nicely, I felt sick and passed out to wake up by la Rochelle. We had a lush meal here on Ile de Re. It’s been fun, time for longfggggg sleeeeep.
Good night.

i’m thinking about maybe a french island somewhere in the world for the summer.
otherwise town here is super busy now, so riding isn’t great and it’s cloudya nd snowy. so time to chill i hope for a couple of weeks and wait for the punters to leave.

so ts now super dark, and seems to be most of the day.
it’s supposed to have been snowing a fair amount, yet all we get is drizzle and cloud.
nic and i have our first french lesson today. there was an aussie there too. it’s not a bad price, and the teacher lady is cool.
we’ll probably be taking these twice a week for 20 weeks, so come on the ability to finally chat up a foreign girl!
oh yeh, i went snowboarding sunday!!!! it was ace, and my body is still aching. the lifts are only open at the weekends. the winter has begun!

hot!
i tried a snowboard, and will keep on demoing boards to find one more appropriate to the big mountains.
the job hunt is slow, as is the house hunt.
a photo i took from the bottom of the mountain the other day:

evening
so tomorrow the car is going to the garage to have the block box recorder fitted for the insurance company.
so nic and i can have a good swim and sauna, and maybe food too.
also, i have started copying all of my dvd’s to my hard drives, so that i can carry my dvd collection without a huge cd wallet, it’s taking time, but no rush. when i’m done i will sendf the dvd’s back to teh uk to be stored. the beginning of the end of physical media.
last thing, i made a great paella last night, and everybody even said they loved it, without teh need to threaten them!

me n me baked rice
also i began to use adobe lightroom 2 today. i think it may avoid the necessity to use photoshop so much. the program will allow me to organise photos, make small modifications. i’m liking it so far!! supposedly i can upload my pics directly to the net.
what else, i’m going to try to convert all of my camera’s raw files to .dng, as this will hopefully become de-facto, and wont become out dated as raw is already.
so now i have downgraded from my slr to my compact, and from photoshop to lightroom. easier to use and with plenty of usefulness.
ciao ciao for now.

so i have been a little busy since i last updated. we haven’t had a good wifi signal here for a while.
i have sun bathed on a nudist beach. i much prefer being naked on the beach, even if it is with a friends family.

i went for a walk to a castle. and on the way home rescued a homeless kitten

she is beautiful and cute, and friendly, and always wants feeding!
the vet says she is in beautiful shape. she had worms and bacteria, but they have been cleaned up. she is in for her first vaccination soon. it will be a while before she is a ok for a passport, in the spring she should be ok to travel to the UK.
but she will join me in the mountains this winter.
it’s a little peculiar being vegetarian and buying meaty stuff!
we finally sold granny and grandad’s house which is great that it is out of the way.
marta and i went to andorra. do not go to andorra it is horrible. the mountains around there are nice. but andorra is a tiny cramped country, steep mountains with it’s valleys filled with horrid shopping centres selling overpriced crap to thousands of smokey tourists.
i have finally managed to get up to date uploading my photos of my travels and life to flickr. it has taken me 8-9 months to get back to this state, but i’m sure i will fall back when i get moving again! it helps to upload pictures that are 1024683 rather than 3888×2592, much quicker!
so have a look at a few:

so i got back from denmark friday.
i loved it,
5 weeks living in a tent,
4 weeks picking strawberries,
hanging with many breton people,
accordion playing,
parties,
rain and cold,
sun and hot and tan,
danish people,
danske,
ice creams,
much food,
cakes,
most beautiful beaches,
swimming in cold sea,
bicycle riding,
working hard,
practicing french.
i really liked denmark and may spend some more time there in the future.
i’ve put on weight, at least one ice cream every day in denmark, means maybe 50 ice creams! and in copenhagen 2 cakes a day for a week. i need to exercise!!!!!!!
for now, i have uploaded more pics to my flickr, go see! they are from ages ago now, but little by little i will catch up!
i’ve completed my verbier winter, and started my road trip. most of my photos in verbier were for my 365 day project, meh.

so tomorrow i start to job hunt, as i have no money.
ideas:
help martin finish building his boat before winter.
pick grapes in france. (mis september to end of october)
but before i can do anything i must work a while here as i’m uber broke.
before winter i must return to london to get my snowboard gear.
also i promised to take nic to climb a mountain somewhere in europe. for this i am looking for other who wish to join.
i’d quite like to see some people in brittany also.
finally i will most likely return to switzerland for the winter, for money reasons mainly as pay is so much better there.
i miss people in london and want to see them!
on a side note, i have managed to get my computer connected to a network here at marta’s, and i love my computer lots, the web and computers are finally advancing to a reasonable point for using the internet.
i’d like a small computer or device with wifi for using on the move. i have no money but can dream. ideas are:
htc diamond, phone like iphone but with more features.
ipone 3g.
asus eee pc, mini pc no bigger than a primary school note book (A5).
cowon q5w, media player.
all of these are similarly priced £200-£300. all could fit into my bag.
also i learned that i need a portable hard disk, as travelling and taking photos causes problems when memory cards are full. another thing i must save for!
tak.
