Changing habits

Friday, October 16th, 2009

So today I did something new, I ate fish! I have good reason to.
Alan and I did stuff, and finished off with breakfast burgers while driving across town to meet a man with a boat.
This man with a boat is known as duck, strange, but true. Duck took us on this boat out towards Cuba, until we couldn’t see land any longer.
We went out into the deep blue to fish, deep sea fish. I think we were inspired by the large photograph that grandpa has hung in his house of him stood by a very large marlin, or sail fish I’m not sure, that he caught down here in key west.
We sun creamed up, and from the red patch on my back, I can’t quite reach my whole back, oops! For it was a glorious sunny day, and then we went in search of birds and sea grass. The birds tend to hover around fish activity which they can see much better and from much further then we on the surface can. And the grass makes for a good hiding place for small fish trying to avoid predation.
Six hours at sea went by in very little time. We dragged lines, searching for tuna and dolphin. The dolphin are not the mammels that we all know, but a fish which goes by the same name. And bites we got, catching a couple of dolphin.
This didn’t last long, and so we motored off further toward the horizon. And before long, by aid of the birds, we found more activity. But now this school of fish was hungry and excited. So we used some more classic rods, making for harder work, but more fun. We caught 8 dolphin so far, lost a couple, threw one back as it was too small. Fish polulations need to be maintained.
Time running out we head back to land. But following sone birds we came across commotion, tuna. However there were dolphins, the mammels, chasing them around, so we started the chase. You have to get ahead of them, so as not too spook them by getting too close. Yet to no avail, we caught no tuna.
No matter as we were lucky enough to see some great turtles, who watch us then dive into the blue below. And even more beautiful we were entertained by the dolphins to a dance, some flipping in the sunset!
Alan and I got set up in the supermarket with some olive oil and Ginger sauce, and I made a salad. So the moment came, and it must have been maybe 8 years since I ate fish, but I did, and enjoyed it, but don’t think that I’ll be making a habit of it. Well that’s pretty extreme for me.
The other guys here commended us on our great fish, so yeh, a great day and successful. :)
What next but to watch ‘into the wild’ and chat about life and loss. It seems that most of us here out of 7 have lost a sibling within the last year, strange, connection, but most of all the realisation that we all go through these strugles and surprises that come at us as we go through life.
So the film has been done beautifully, not to the book, but based upon real life, it is beautiful while sad, but paints well the picture of his life and the effect he left upon the world after death.
And with that it’s that. Another day in America, doing the American thing!

Concrete jungle

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Super tired, jet lagged still I suppose.
Breakfast included orange juice made from oranges picked from the tree in the garden no longer than twenty minutes earlier, couldn’t be much fresher or yummier!
Today alan, gunnar and I have been driving around from city to city in Los Angeles. We were on the road nine hours, and have had some experiences. The car sales men, and even nice ladies seem to have no clu about cars, being incapable or unwilling to explain issues like such as why the 4 wheel drive or air conditioning doesn’t work, or even being unable to speak English. So there has been one promising Chevrolet Yukon. We’ll have to see what options there are tomorrow.
The flight was long, yum food, plenty o’ booze and films; Star trek, Fast and furious, Fifty dead men walking and Terminator salvation. I’d say watch star trek, but the best was the indi Irish film, fifty dead men walking, so find it and watch it.
It’s cool to be back in the sun, and it still hasn’t hit in that we’re on holiday, let alone left Europe for who knows long. I guess this is just life.
And Connie and Gunnar are lovely.
Who wants to walk the great wall of china with me?
Time for a barbie.

Cooling off.
Dad, Alison, Paul, sophie, alan and I are near Salisbury at the maybe’s house in the country. We had a nice nature hunt in wellies. Then snooker, the oldies being smashed by the kids. A lovely home meal was followed by a crazy three a side familiy on on family ping pong match, which was pretty chaotic. Five balls at once is hard to follow.
So what better way than to have a sauna/swim session? So ultimatly I feel tired but freshhhh.
My walk Tuesday was great, I wrote a poemish thing. Then sweated a whole load and ate lots of free fruit.
Wednesday involved doing Very little. Dad alan and I saw district 9 in letchworth cinema, nice, comfy, cheap. I must say that the film I worth watching, it’s a new idea, with good morals. The basics are refugee treatment, and solidarity and freedom, see it, it’s wicked!
Yesterday we had a memorial for Ian/Nam, with some old family friends, families who we grew up with, nanny, some of his school friends, and family. It was emotional, but wonderful. Again yo hear such wonderful things, atop a hill under the sun was great. Being talked into taking part was definately worth it, it was cleansing, and left me feeling great.
Afterwards, some came back to dads for dinner, and it was the first time that us Home Farm kids were together in donkey’s years.
So to bed and a day of who knows what tomorrow.

Why is there a great big Belgian helicopter in Regents park?

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

There’s a huge helicopter here in the north of Regents park, why?
I got a new passport the other day, after lots of waiting and hanging around. While waiting I saw G.I. Joe in Peterborough cinema, which wasn’t bad. I did expect the worst, but was quite entertained. I guess I was impressed due to my poor expectations.
Afterwards, I met jab for a pint at charters and we were joined by sean and tessa which was nice. It’s been years since I’ve seen them. Sean’s becoming hippy! And I saw adam. It’s wicked to have time to catch up with people.
Last night hannah, angel and I went out in the east end, cargo. It was cool. Even cooler that the club has a photo booth :) It wasn’t cool that I lost my phone. As it turned out it slipped out of my pocket in the taxi. And luck would have it that the taxi driver answered it and returned it :)
In Angel’s place they have a free gym and pool. So after breakfast we had a quick sauna and jacuzzi, wonderful.
Are these Belgians lost?
Today I’m just chilling. I think I’ll head back up to Cambridge in a bit.
I wish it was sunnier here in England.

Misty fens

Friday, August 7th, 2009

It’s two days since I was at the gym, I’m still achey, so I definately wish to go some more. Alan is huge, it’s almost wierd.
I saw the hangover, it’s funny, good enough to save to my computer.
I just changed trains, rushed, bought water and got funny tasting water, damn!!! Kinda refreshing.
Ely looks nice, misty, where is the beautiful weather?
Yesterday I was super productive, I filled in forms, wrote a résumé, sent off my broken hard disk and feel great for actually getting stuff done.
Dad and I went to see moon, a good film. I don’t think I’ve ever been to the cinema with dad to see a film that you have to concentrate, so new things. Very psychological, dark, great sound track, worth seeing. I’ve never been to a cinema that you can soy and drink alchohol in, so I had me a nice glass of red wine :)
Afterwards I met olivia, maybe for the first time in 4 or 5 years. It’s strange how meeting some friends and it’s like it’s been no time at all. We went to the cheeseyest club I think I’ve ever been to. After in a bar a guy tried picking me up, I didn’t realise and said something a bit rude, but still got a drink out of it!
Stayed at olivia’s with her freaky little dog. And now I’m en route to Peterborough to get a new passport, I think I’ll get there way too early, so will get me some lush breakfast somewhere. I need it after drinking last night.

Airborne

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

I’m on a wizzair flight from Luton to Budapest. Super tired, I had to wake at half four to take a bus to the airport, which I almost missed. I find myself cutting things quite fine thes days.
Yesterday was pretty depressing.
To start off I saw the mess that was the front end of my car, after hitting the animal, destroyed bumper, broken windscreen/headlamp washer system. Great so that needs fixing as well as the exhaust and windscreen.
It was raining most of the day.
I went to the hair dresser to get a hair cut and was told by a hair dresser of thirty years to wait for somebody else to cut my hair. He couldn’t get his mind around cutting my hair in a non-classic, unconventional fashion. Well now I have shorter, more normal hair, than I can remember having. I like it.
So on the up dad alan and I went to the cinema to see Pelham 1-2-3. It was very Hollywood and predictable, and fairly entertaining, but not something that I’d usually pay to watch.
To heat up the damp day we went for an Indian, so the day was not the worst ever.
This seems to be the trend when I return to the uk, damp, dark, drab, dull. But that’s only because I just came from the beach. I still love the place, just probably couldn’t enjoy living there.
Off to the sun, dentist and fun I go.

A la plage

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

I’m on cortis plage with ian, court and alex’s family. It’s roasting in the sun, but the breeze is starting.
Oscar is convinced to body board with courtney instead of me, so I can rest a bit and desaltify me. The waves here aren’t too big, but still fun, but there’s a strong current running by here.
This is my first stop on my way back north to England, not that I’m far north from yesterday.
Yesterday after we all managed to get our hungovers arses out of the flat we left nico at work and went to the beach at vieux beacou, where craig, ninka and others from verbier are working. Unfortunately the waves were too big to learn to surf, next time I guess.
After Charlie went to work, jo, maria an I headed home for spagets and film. We saw lesbian vampire killers. I expected some atrocias American B movie. But it was an English comedy, maybe almost as good as hot fuzz!? So watch it.
Tomorrow it’s time to head up to St. Malo.

Enlightening

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Nam and I went into Glastonbury to see their shop, make juice and see more of the town. It’s hard to get anywhere fast, buMping into people all of the time.
The juice felt awesome, as did being around these powerful characters.
I chose to leave on a high, and must return to enjoy the place more.
This evening I met alive, izzi’s sister in Bristol. So we walked a lot and I saw how beautiful the city is, and the great cider. And it’s pretty posh, even the bums speak better English than many londoners.
We came back to Weston for borat and pizza.
Now I must sleep as I’m too tired to type.

Waking and waking and waking

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

I think I’m awake now. I’ve been repeatedly dreaming that I’m awake and starting the day. Only to roll over and back to sleep. I can’t remember the other dreams, but they’ve been strange.
From Liverpool I stopped by dads and saw alan.
Then I headed over to silverstone to see chris and andy and the rest of the family. It was great to see chris, and was entertaining to get drunk, have a BBQ and see his family pass out one by one.
I’ve now got my bike in the car and trashed soMe stuff from the store.
Yesterday I arrived into Glastonbury, phone out of battery. I hoped and had a feeling that I’d bump into nam, rather than having to find somewhere to charge my phone or work out other means to find him. And luckily enough I bumped into him just before entering a phone box( I didn’t have his number, so no idea what I’d have done).
We had a little tour, followed by a run up the tor. I met aria and lucyfer, two wonderful people who he lives with outside of Glastonbury.
She insisted repeatedly that we watch ‘legends of zu’, damn good that she did, it is awesome!!
So off to sleep to catch up in the last few days. I hope for a better head tomorrow.

Rain rain, go away, come again another day

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

This morning i woke up after a good nights sleep. We had some bran and donned the wetsuits. I was taken on an awesome tour around the area, by Jet ski! It wasn’t too cold, but the rain in the face made it impossible to see above 50kph, but didn’t stop me pushing for 75kph. We came across seals, and ruins, and islands, the funnest couchsurf ever?
So I made the drive back up to Dublin an arrived in time to have a meal at an indian, spicy, and catch the boat towards Liverpool. It was mainly truckers, but free food, not that I was hungry. Also we were warned of gale force winds up to force 8. No problem, but we may arrive into Liverpool early, due to us leaving Dublin early.
Back to watching ‘the little girl who lives down the lane’. Good night.
