A montagne

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

After the sleep lacked night, I woke up to a beautiful sunrise over the channel. Then off to the boat and I decided not to use the gps. I lost confidence in her, and prefer to find a more interesting route. Not to mention the fun of getting lost.
It was a beautiful drive to Belgium, Luxembourg, across to Germany, back to France along the Rhone, into Germany with some flower picking. There I got some speed up, but got a spot of trouble when I filled up the tank and my cards wouldn’t work, but thanks to martin I got away. I came into Switzerland just before sunset, which made for a stunning drive from Basel to Bern and Lausanne, a wonderful fun drive down, akin to watching Top Gear.
Sunday morning nic and I went for a dizzying walk, and even saw some marmots!
Monday I went to the gym, didn’t notice the time and left two and a half hours later aching and tired.
I went to see harriet and cedric, then back to nic and toto’s for a dinner party, yum yum, but couldn’t wait for sleep.
Now nic and I are doing errands, working on getting the car ready to sell.

Rough seas

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

i spent yesterday evening with izzi n her boyfriend mark. we had a nicish dinner by the canal in sardo. nice food, but poor value for money, and one rude waiter. but the guys were fun, and i spent some time with fronk, izzi’s baby puppy pug. it is insane, and pugly and cute and wierd!

i picked up a new pair of yen jeans. i love the design of these jeans. they aren’t cheap, but i guarentee that i will wear the life out of them. i haven’t really worn much in the way of other trousers, apart from yen’s, in the past 4 years. independant small designers beat the highstreet in my opinion.

i then met agota up in turnpike lane and we set off for fishguard. so this journey was slow due to traffic, and to make the long day worse, we arrived 40 minutes after a ferry left, leaving us with a two and a half hour wait before the next departure. also i had a couple of words from the local constabulary due to an overtaking i made earlier in the county, but all fine. it shows how different a world that i have been living in to that which is so close by.

so the ferry wasn’t without incident. agota and i sat upstairs to avoid the crowds of kids, to get some peace. once we left, she made a little joke about sea sickness. but this soon turned into a nightmare, for agota, and the whole ship. we were on a smallish catamaran ferry and so the small swells caused a lot of rolling. after 15 minutes agota ran to the toilets, and i didn’t see her for an hour and a half. for the rest of the ship, i have never seen so many sick people in my life. 80% of the passengers were regularly using the sick bags. piles of them dissappeared from the stocks. i didn’t have the slightest problem, but it was pretty disturbing to watch it, like watching a school that has just been poisoned. well you should have seen the passenger’s faces pick up colour when the captain announced that we were 10 minutes from land.

the drive to dublin was peaceful and slow. the government here really pushes the lower speed limit, and with shock signs it is very effective.

agota and i went out for a pint, some greasy food and came home for a bit more drinking, and a french chat with her flatmates. so it’s time for bed, it’s been a long day.

but first you have to watch the best ever topgear road test:

autumn breaks

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

summer is over, and it’s been great, i’ve seen more countries than i can remember.

barbados was ace with izzi. it was the end of the rainy season and we caught the tail end of a tropical storm, so a little wet, but still sunny at times. we rented a little car, mini moke which was great fun to drive, and explore the island, and a great colour!

it was great to be in london for a couple of days, though i will be back there this weekend coming.

i hope to go to the metro snow show at olympia, and the festival at battersea.

so im in spain, and leaving here tomorrow. i think i’ll miss it and marta a bit. but i am hugely looking forward to winter.

i’ll be driving back with harriet to verbier tomorrow, dad is convinced she’ll be sick everywhere, but we’ll have to see. she’s very good, and hasn’t needed sedation at the vets, which is great. she now has her european pet passport, so she can travel around europe easier than many people can!

so off on the next adventure.

hot and cold

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

i had an great time with ben, harry, amy, leona and felix in barbate near cadiz in the south of spain. it was lovely to be by the ocean, rather than the med. to sum it up, 1.65 euro cava from lidl, long blonde beach, chiringito, waves, sun burn, digging holes, and fussy eating.

then i had a pleasant few day in the north of england. i stayed with ben’s family, saw the sunnyest weekend the north had all summer, and had a nice cool weekend.

there were a few short days in mataro including taking the rover to be scrapped.

then i came to switzerland. my goals for this trip were:
- buy a car,
- find a place to live for the winter.

so goal one, i flew to zurich on the friday, and got a rental car, which was great, just 20pounds per day. it was a big renault scenic automatic. i now know i don’t like automatic, but i guess that is my style of driving. i couch surfed for 3 nights with lisa. in the day time i’d drive around and check out cars which i had found to fit my bill on autoscout and stopping at every garage i passed along the way. and by evening i did things, like walk and dine with michelle another couch surfer from brazil, goto the freestyle festival with lisa followed by the after party, go indoor rock climbing. watch a couple of films on the projector.

on the monday i stayed with another girl, kim, but we were exhausted, so just chilled at her flat. so i found 2 cars. one racy Audi S4, and a more conservative Audi A4TDI. I wanted the diesel for economic reasons, but in the end i had no contact from the garage, that and desire lead me to buy the S4: audi s4 b5 negaro blue car seen on flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/owenthatsmyname/

So i spent a night with one of dad’s friends from uni, which was very nice, so much chatting and cheese.

i dropped the rental car off at the airport and a 2 hour train ride later i was across the country and there to buy my car. I had gone through a bit of stress to get temporary number plates. You get the plates after the car, and only in the region you live in, so i had to get the actual ones later. It was a lovely drive from there to Verbier. Which is where my worries began. They refused to give me plates, my permit for residence being for last winter. I have tried asking for assistance from everybody, but no luck, the car is now parked here, no plates, and un-driveable :(

The biggest problem is that i can’t drive to spain to get my stuff (clothes, computer, cat) and i have had to fork out for a last minute flight back to barcelona. The rush being that I fly to london on Monday.

Swiss people don’t take risks, and the beaurocracy is absurd compared to what i’m used to, and I thought the UK was bad.

As for finding a place to live for nic+Toto and I is nigh on impossible. It’s possible to find the odd free room, with people who have rented a place bigger than they need, but not a 2 bedroom place. So I tried other resorts. Crans Montana wasn’t to my liking, and no places available, likewise Villars. But in Leysin I not only found lovely people, lovely vibe but also a great place to live.

So now i must decide whether I goto Leysin on my own for the winter, or lump Verbier again. You can tell that Verbier isn’t such a hot place in my opinion. I’ll try to bag the flat, and see what happens later on this month when I return.

This leaves me sat here in Yoan’s flat with his lovely big cats listening to VH1 on his ginormous TV. My plans have not worked out this time. So much for being organised, i’m better at last-minute disorganised.

Oh and its snowing here yay :)

The trip to england, I promised to spend time with izzi, and after trawling the net for a cheapish place to meet her in the sun I thought gran canaria would have to do. But lo and behold an email from British Airways and they had a sale on holidays, and I chose Barabados as it turns out to be cheaper :D

So off to the last sun of the year for me, and I can’t wait.

Oh and I can’t express how happy I am to be in the mountains.

a little lead

Monday, September 8th, 2008

i’m just sticking a bunch of movies on my phone for entertainment.

little update,
harriet is coming along great with her training to walk on the lead. she has never batted an eyelid at the idea of wearing a harness or even the lead. but i’ve now started walking around the flat with her, and she seems to be doing great.
i hope she does so well outdoors, but it could take time. but if it all works out, then walking her around would seriously help with travelling.

so i’m packed and good to go just fannying about wasting time. maybe i goto the beach before i leave. but why bother if i’m going to teh south of spain to sit on a beach?

oh and i’ll be flying with spanair, the airline that had teh crash a couple of weeks ago, so some excitment, i think not!

activity

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

i’ve spent a whole lot of time wasting time on the net. mainly reading, about tech, about mountains, about photography. cramming more information in there. harriet thinks my laptop is the ideal bed, but only when i am trying to use it!

reduction in productivity

but i have also been a little active. no visits to the beach, i think i will do enough of that in cadiz next week.

on tuesday i cooked a lasagne from scratch, and it was delicious, and super cheesey, my belly shows growth!

but on wednesday marta went to work. she’s not too happy about it, but who would be after a 5 month holiday?

so i went to montserrat not the Caribbean island but the monastery/mountain slightly inland from barcelona. i was a fool and not only left the gps at home, but didn’t even think to look at the map. i drove past the mountain on the way to andorra, and thought i could find my way there unaided. so i ended up with a tour of central barcelona, and many traffic lights!

the mountain is very interesting, and the reason i went was to walk, not so much to visit the monastery. i’m told that excavations centuries ago unearthed a statue of the virgin mary and the monks build their refuge there. i was going to walk from the base of the mountain, but since there was no information online, i couldn’t find a route to start from so rove to the monastery. very touristy! but i made for the summits (there are funicular railways but that takes the joy out of it) and went to the further higher peak. very nice warm day, but it was hazy, so no great views. i made my way to the other side of the mountain, where the lift goes. i made my way down. i had a quick look around the new monastery. there are even hotels built up there! but i missed out the main attraction, the caves built into the mountain by the monks, purposely. i will make another trip back there and walk the entire mountain from the base to the caves. it’s the only large mountain so easily accessible.

to find other routes, i will have to enlist marta to search the net, or invest in some books, or wait until i get to the alps.

yesterday i walked from badalona to barcelona, about 20km and took some photos. i ended the evening in a bar with a transsexual and a couple of others. so it was nice to socialise, and made me feel like i was in london in a way.

i feel i’ve missed much socialising this summer, but i think it is relative, because i have done a lot, even though it isn’t like london. it’s great to have new experiences and do new things.

i’m thinking about buying a kite, so that i can learn to kite surf!

i’m off to seville to meet ben, harry and amy on monday and stay in cadiz for a few days, so more sun sun sun!!

hey ho, it´s sweaty

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

so i haven´t bene doing much. i wake up, walk a bit, look for things to do.

mainly i spend the day trying not to move unless it´s worthwhile, because otherwise i sweat a bit. i´m glad i´m not a big swaeter, because i think it would be horrible here.

the most productive things that i have done are book some flights.

on the 8th i am flying to seville to meet harry ben and amy to spend some time on the beach at cadiz. so life as usual, except stronger sun, so need to get some stronger cream.

i return here on the 16th, only to fly to england on the 17th. i´m flying to manchester. dad wont collect me until the evening of the 17th, so i have to find something to do with myself for a day.
then we are going to go walking in teh lake district, so some cool weather which i can´t wait for!

then i´m back here the 21st.

harriet has an appointment with the vet on the 25th. and then maybe i will make a move. unless i have to make another vet appointment. i want to get harriet her passpiort as soon as possible.

i had a serious look into buying a car,
so to register a car in spain and get licence plates will cost over 3000euros!
cars in spain are more expensive than say germany.
cars are nicely cheaper in germany and switzerland.
if i really feel i need a car when i get back to switzerland, i will get one there, as most other countries will be difficult to get my own insurance in.

cars wise i was looking at audi a4 estate diesel 4wd, as this looks the most sensible option. i can afford a nice one, but do i need it.

needless to say i will forget about that for now, and hope that the rover does it´s job.

harriet

Friday, August 15th, 2008

so i have been a little busy since i last updated. we haven’t had a good wifi signal here for a while.

i have sun bathed on a nudist beach. i much prefer being naked on the beach, even if it is with a friends family.

me nudist beach naked spain

i went for a walk to a castle. and on the way home rescued a homeless kitten

my kitten cute cat harriet
she is beautiful and cute, and friendly, and always wants feeding!
the vet says she is in beautiful shape. she had worms and bacteria, but they have been cleaned up. she is in for her first vaccination soon. it will be a while before she is a ok for a passport, in the spring she should be ok to travel to the UK.
but she will join me in the mountains this winter.
it’s a little peculiar being vegetarian and buying meaty stuff!

we finally sold granny and grandad’s house which is great that it is out of the way.

marta and i went to andorra. do not go to andorra it is horrible. the mountains around there are nice. but andorra is a tiny cramped country, steep mountains with it’s valleys filled with horrid shopping centres selling overpriced crap to thousands of smokey tourists.

i have finally managed to get up to date uploading my photos of my travels and life to flickr. it has taken me 8-9 months to get back to this state, but i’m sure i will fall back when i get moving again! it helps to upload pictures that are 1024683 rather than 3888×2592, much quicker!

so have a look at a few:
