Fear and loathing in LA

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

So what has happened?

Well, England has been doing crap in the world cup.

We have a new member in our crew, Bex. Malcolm knows her from when he was young and she turned up in her pumped out camper van. Awesome girl it’s great to have her with us.

It was her birthday the day she arrived, so we had a bit of a party.

Alan called to say that there was no way he could register or sell the car without me going to the DMV myself. And as we start work next week for the summer, it meant I had to go to LA right away. So with flights at over $400 it made more sense to think about driving. So I proposed this to the guys, and malcolm’s smile literally went ear to ear and I know it was road trip time.

What with alan leaving for Mexico I asked him to wait til tuesday so we could go to the DMV together. We rose early Sunday morning, packed a bit of stuff into the car and made for the border.

It turns out that you can’t bring peppers, oranges, mangos, jalapeños or onions into the states, but they let us eat them, the nicest border guards ever, and we were on our way.

Fast forward 25 hours later, 3 Taco Bells, 2 Subways and 1200 miles and we arrived into LA Monday morning and went to the beach.

Twice now I’ve said goodbye to alan and the guys, only to randomly find them again, so we hooked up.

I have to say that the American DMV and the whole buracratic system is bullshit. Waiting for and hour and a half to get a ticket to wait another 45 minutes, to be told very rudely that we couldn’t pay with a foreign card, to then get cash and wait some more is crap. In Britain most stuff can be done online and saves so much time and governmental money, it makes the US system so stupid.
However we finally got the plates and we will hopefully never have to do it again.

That meant mission successful, and time to enjoy California :)

That night we four partied in Venice beach and slept in the car.

The next day we did a little shopping and headed to a side of the city i’ve never seen to meet malcolm’s mate who just got back from a year in OZ. He’s a photographer, graphic designer and musician and showed us some cool sites up in the hills, and we did the touristy thing walking up and down sunset strip and a cheapo Mexican eat.

We ended up at the band rooms and killed the car battery so had a car park party with all the musicians, and this guy who is the producer for Queen, Smashing Pumpkins and a whole load more bands I’ve forgotten, oh yeh the Darkness too.

So after two hours trying to jump start the car, a call to AAA we got off and headed back down towards the beach, via the Internet cafe, sport shop to exchange bex’s skateboard and done shopping we finally made it to Venice beach again.

It’s getting cool, Im super exhausted but I’ll go and have dinner with gunnar and then we have some party in Hollywood to go to.

Life is beautiful. Time to throw the frisbee about.

Beauty all about

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

I’m laying in my pants on my roll mat on a floor. It’s warm. Warm likes hot afternoon in USA, yet it’s 2am.
Last night alan returned, no problems bar road works, but he brought hiddeous alcahol, horrible so that I had to take an hours walk before considering sleep.
So we escaped the camp, no bill, and woke up to a swim, mmm.
Then a drive through te Everglades to avoid the toll road, narrowly avoiding lawful run in, go mercedes man driving a bit faster.
So now we’re in key west, the southern most point of the USA. Hence the temperature, I don’t feel so bad as some of the other surfers staying here.
Our couch host has 5, yes five, of us couchsurfers staying tonight!
We cooked a nice dinner, nice curry. Host, Penelope, turned from veggie this evening. Then all bar her we went out.
Well nicola, he’s still out, we left him in the strip bar.
So sleep tight, for the mossies are out tonight!

Waves and stars

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Here I am sat at the waterline. Watching the screen I see nothong but blackness.
I’ve been playing and drinking with alan. It seems that the spellcheck doesn’t work when you are drunk? So it is all down to me.
I don’t ubdrstand why spellcheck wo t work.
So alan and I drank a fair bit, unpleaseant drinks, I’m so bloated that if I could make myself sick, then I’d feel good.
So I came for a walk along the sea shore. Mgmt :) . It helps to walk. I’m tired, and aftr our last camping experiences then. Maybe I’m aprehensive!
If only there wasn’t the mosqiyo problem and I could sleep here? But if I did they’d eat me alive, if not the the mermaids would.
Tonight we had the most psycadedic sunset ever, maybe out whole trip :)

This is England. ‘s summer

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

I’m down on west wittering beach. Lovely golden sands. Old English country homes along the dunes. Kites flying. People swimming. Yachts sailing. Reeds twitching. Children laughing. Second world war planes droning above. Waves crashing beyond. This is the most english beach i’ve been on. Perfect for a bit of sun bathing!
Where’s the ice cream? Cider?
Sat here is gorgeous on this beautiful sunny day, with the isle of Wight a haze out there. England at it’s finest. I guess the cycle ride here put me in the perfect demeanor. This area Is awesome.
Yesterday was quite a sucess. After an early wake, tidy up, the boat was hauled off down to the mud. We kept busy doing bits. And a few hours later, the tide was up, and the boat was afloat, can I day huray? It’s taken a bit longer than initially planned, but we motored her down to a marina.
It feels like purpose is partially fulfilled, and is great to feel her floating. Not long now and she’ll be ready to sail.
Last night after all of the excitment, I went off with oli. I worked with oli in the Cyberdog shop in Camden years back. It was great to have such a serious, deep conversation. And quite a surprise, as I never knew oli was of such a way of thinking.
The two pint of local cider, and take-away Chinese made for a good sleep.
Well I better get moving, wash and get yo London. It’s ben’s birthday party.
It’s such a shame to leave paradise.
…another time.

Soggy pug pig

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Today was a glorious sunny day, for the most part.
It was great to have the day with my other family. After a hearty breakfast we went for a walk along the coast, with much Fronk play, channel swimming and a pic nic on the beach.
Deb managed to put us half to sleep with a fire at home.
So I ran off before my eyelids fell. And now I’m back near Chichester.
I’m very happy to have managed to get down to kernow and the draganfly cottage.
So an early rise tomorrow, and time to see if this big boat can float!

Poker n’ace

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

So I came so close to winning poker, second however is not winning. I think I needed more booze to keep it straight and level headed. Well €2 in no loss.
Yesterday I had a margerita, soo strong, only a swim in big waves to reduce it before dinner, geez looking after children is tiring. The drive back was late, long, fast, bumpy and fun.
I found a dead bat in the car. I drove 600km smoothly, found beaches, realised my phone won’t work, and spent time running around time trying to get a phone card.
I’m in a tent in st malo, beautiful, rightfully touristy town. It’s kind of like Dubrovnik in Croatia, just islands of castles. There’s even a diving board into a pool, that is hidden when the tide is up.
It’s super brittanic, I like, I’ll try and have a crepe tomorrow, I’ve never actually had one in britanny!
I saw alex earlier, recovering from the weekend. Then I spent the evening in the countriside playing poker, a nice frenchy evening, where I was branded as not English.
Maybe tomorrow I could be daring enough to dive off the high board into the pool by the sea?!?!

A la plage

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

I’m on cortis plage with ian, court and alex’s family. It’s roasting in the sun, but the breeze is starting.
Oscar is convinced to body board with courtney instead of me, so I can rest a bit and desaltify me. The waves here aren’t too big, but still fun, but there’s a strong current running by here.
This is my first stop on my way back north to England, not that I’m far north from yesterday.
Yesterday after we all managed to get our hungovers arses out of the flat we left nico at work and went to the beach at vieux beacou, where craig, ninka and others from verbier are working. Unfortunately the waves were too big to learn to surf, next time I guess.
After Charlie went to work, jo, maria an I headed home for spagets and film. We saw lesbian vampire killers. I expected some atrocias American B movie. But it was an English comedy, maybe almost as good as hot fuzz!? So watch it.
Tomorrow it’s time to head up to St. Malo.

Brain pain

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

I’m in hossegar, just north of biaritz, we can see biaritz and Spain from the beach.
I’m in a world of verbier guys, staying with nico and charlie, another couple of verbs are here too. I bumped into vince my head chef from winter last night. It’s so bizarre, verbier life is everywhere.
It’s so nice to be back by the sea. Yesterday nico and I were body surfing in waves up to 2m. It’s crazy floating up the on the crest, like flying, like superman.
Last night we did the verbier thing and drank loads, so feeling rough now. I still don’t enjoy the meat Market clubs. I’m awake, waiting for these other guys to wake, or at least admit that they are also awake.
Then we can go to the beach. I’ve never even touched a surf board, but joao is a surf instructor, so no time like now to try.
And here I am sleeping on a double bed sized sofa bed, the luxury!

Organic is orgasmic

Friday, June 26th, 2009

I had a lovely vegorganic breakfast near the ramblas in Barcelona this morning. I haven’t eaten since then an am a bit peckish, I feel like eating cold tortilla.
Just now the waves came flying up the beach, screams all round, and some people fleed with wet towels :)
I’m laying on the beach near mongat nord, it’s just about a barable temperature in the air. I’m waiting for laia to finish work, then see what we will get up to. Hanging in premia is boring, but going into Barcelona is expensive, so have to wait n see.
Last night I stayed in a pleasent enough hostel, ramblas house, supposedly a chilled place. I needed sleep, otherwise I would have loved to have joined the cards and drinking.
But the highlight was going to see the ‘magic fountain’ near placa españa. Last year the fountain wasn’t running due to drought, but my god, everybody has to see this. It’s an opera of water, a giant colour changing, musical phenomena. There were maybe 2000 people there. It was possibly better with the occassional showers passing over, and red yellow sky off inland.

193mph

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

Or 311kph, I’m on a train from Barcelona to Madrid right now. I think this is the fastest that I’ve ever travelled at on land.
My shoulders are peely from too much sun a week ago in lacauno.
Yesterday I met laia on the beach at premia se mar. We had some beers, dinner, wine, And she got quite drunk. She’s made a new song, it’s nice but needs much work. I’m impressed that she’s working things out to have time to make music, and live.
This morning I had an hour on the beach, so I feel a little rosy, but not burned, good!
Today will be the first time that I’ve ever been to Madrid, flying in on the way to Peru doesn’t count.
So I guess I’m staying with esti, maybe see victor, maybe a friend of laia, I have no idea about this place.
