Alan and I just swapped over driving, he has to get us the last 100km to Wawa on the north east corner of lake superior. We’ll have driven around 850km, which doesn’t sound much, just over 500 miles, but these long straightish, boring road are tiring.
I can’t wait to get to a motel and lay on a bed, a bed I’ll have all to myself
So yesterday and Niagara falls, I found to be a bit of a dissappointment. Maybe because they are so hyped up, maybe because we couldn’t ride the boat under the falls due to it being winter, but they are real impressive and powerful, but just can’t compare with some of the things that we’ve seen on our tour. At least that’s another thing I can tick off having achieved in my lifetime.
We also crossed into USA, and the town on the otherwise is a dump, dirty, crumbling, boarded up and generally unhappy. We had two errands to do, one sucessful, one not. We did have lunch there, probably cheaper than Canada, but I’m not sad to see the end of USA for this year, ‘oh canada’
After a tedious trafficky drive back to Toronto in rush hour for me, we sat down and got productive. I think that we’re sorted for places to rest on this long drive, and we made a start on applying for work in the Rockies, so go us.
The night ended with pitchers and gravy fries in town.
Oh today we went into one of these drive in lube places for a service. I find it pretty novel that you can just drive up and have your car serviced. It puts my mind to rest that out car is healthy and should be problem free for our drive in the almost wilderness.
So goodbye Toronto, courtney, laura, Cara and all else like city culture and off into the endless prairies we motor.
The photos are; niagara falls, the car in mr lube, niagara falls town and the view I can see out of the windscreen right now.

Was the best personalised plate I’ve seen in a while, on an Audi S4, nice.
So now we’re in Toronto headed out in the car to go and see courtney’s dad, the dentist, because has cavities which need sorting now.
So back to the other day and our journey away from America. With ian in the car we had a gorgeous drive up through Vermont to the border, the car clean and tidy we expected the worst. I guess it was a bother that we had to cross the border on the highway, putting us an extra hour out of our preferred route to the cottage.
But upon talking to the border guard, she seemed so overwhelmed by these English guys asking for their work visa that she didn’t even care about our lack of car registration, let alone check our vehicle contents, score 1.
Then inside the building we had to await for a grand 8 minutes and were issued with a Canadian work permit, score 1. It couldn’t have gone more smoothly
So we spent a couple of nights at ian’s dads cottage on lake mamphemagog, peaceful, beautiful totally chilled.
We had a hike up the ski hill, showing us how unfit we are, but the views were awesome.
Then we all had a campfire in the Cold and a BBQ, damn my garlic aubergine steaks were killer.
Wednesday we went up to Montreal. Ian spent all day stressing having left his phone charger in the states, we not having a place to crash, so we stayed in a hostel, so great to meet some random people. And later we met ian’s uni mates for a few drinks, finished off with a tour of mont real to see the city from above at night, stunning.
It’s a nice city, an the girls are gorgeous, but it was time to move on.
So on the boring drive down the 401 to Toronto we got the blue and red flashing lights of trouble. So we got pulled by an unmarked police, very amiable man. But still he issued us with a $170 fine for driving with a radar detector, fair enough, but if we’d known then we wouldn’t have driven with it. So now he has it and we can only guess that in general it’s saved us money on speeding fines on our 7000 mile drive around the states.
So toronto. It’s obviously pretty wealthy compared to most places that we’ve been to on our trip, I’m judging by the abundance of nice European cars and expensive fashion around here.
So the city skyline is nice especially at night with the CN tower pulsing with different colours.
Hangind with courtney and laura and their friends we are getting to see the cooler side to the town, bars and music and it’s great to hang around with some lovely ladies.
So far we’ve been having a great time, though it’s been a while since I’ve not felt tired, maybe linger since we’ve had a night off from partying, but good times.

I’m laying in my pants on my roll mat on a floor. It’s warm. Warm likes hot afternoon in USA, yet it’s 2am.
Last night alan returned, no problems bar road works, but he brought hiddeous alcahol, horrible so that I had to take an hours walk before considering sleep.
So we escaped the camp, no bill, and woke up to a swim, mmm.
Then a drive through te Everglades to avoid the toll road, narrowly avoiding lawful run in, go mercedes man driving a bit faster.
So now we’re in key west, the southern most point of the USA. Hence the temperature, I don’t feel so bad as some of the other surfers staying here.
Our couch host has 5, yes five, of us couchsurfers staying tonight!
We cooked a nice dinner, nice curry. Host, Penelope, turned from veggie this evening. Then all bar her we went out.
Well nicola, he’s still out, we left him in the strip bar.
So sleep tight, for the mossies are out tonight!

So called the sunshine state, here in florida it’s rainy. We came for our last dose of sun before our über winter. So come on weather man and sort it out mate.
Yesterday we rose late after the late night, for a big ol creole and Italian family invasion for our host and us.
Off and away we drove for a tour of the city. Vince knows the city better than I could imagine a local does, he’s been there just 6 years. We saw uptown, the garden district and warehouse district, which are magnificent and super history rich.
Then a quick cuppa tea from a cowboy and we headed in the opposite direction.
Off we went to the the part of town that remains in a struggle of recovery since hurricane Katrina 5 years ago.
Everywhere you look are either piles of rubble, building sites, or where there is a lack of money then vacant lots of land. The streets look to peculiar with gaps between houses.
That however is not the worst. There are lots of house boarded up, rotting, roofs collapsing. Marked on the front remains the identification made by the military to note how many animals and humans lay dead within that needed collecting. It makes you think of the black plague back in history.
We drove for a long time, seeing parks where many of the trees are gone due to salt water poisoning, roads full of holes. But nothing was quite like the east side of town which had been hit worst. Being the first side of town to in the line of fire, house sat under up to 20ft/6m of water. Entire streets have been washed away. Here it is like a jungle with the odd house either standing and rotting, or where hopeful people have rebuilt they’re house.
It’s a very sad thing to see the city in ruins, many people having left for good, many people still trying to rebuild thier lives, many who died. And what is worse is that the hurricane barely even touched the city, it was the fore of the storm that caused the destruction directly but more down to human stupidity.
The city had little defence to the forces of nature. In the way that London has the Thames barrier, New Orleans had nothing. A few levees, but not around the whole city, had no chance to keep the waters back.
The people are fighting to rebuild their city and lives, but the government here sees the place as third world, so not even worth thinking about. But this makes the place such a wonderful change to our trip around the US. It isn’t third world, but is very different. We both think it’s the best city that we’ve been to over here so far!
We met some locals, then headed back to town for some proper creole cuisine, even I was catered for, yum!
Then we had a pretty gay night out. Fun, and not much of an early night as we’d hoped, but a great finish to our visit.
So we drove today, we passed Mississippi and Alabama but with little stopping except to dip our feet in the gulf of Mexico.
To finish off we’ve just been to the cinema and seen Zombieland. I think there must have been a stretch where I wasn’t laughing of 3 minutes. It’s cheesey, funny and well just good gorey entertainment that I would recommend everybody with a funny bone to go and see!
“So nut up or shut up.”

We’ve had a great couple of days. After an uninspiring drive across new Mexico we went to Santa Fe to kill some time, couple of days, and stopped in a nice hotel, used the gym and went for Chinese. They even make the Chinese food with chillies, well this is the state of chillies.
We then took out bloated selves into town to find a bar, and found a good long bar, good music called el paseo. Beers later and we got chatting to cha, jack and katy, with 2 hours until cha’s birthday we drank until it came time to start doing shots, and when that bar closed at two onwards to the next bar for some smokey magic, and fuzzyness before getting a lift to the hotel.
Yesterday morning alan and I went for a wander around town. It’s pretty, all classic architecture, brown, earthy and full of art. The city is known to be a centre of creative people, and is america’s oldest capital, celebrating it’s 400th anniversary this month! America is barely over half that age.
So we had some brunch, a priceyish rooftop cafe, and I had a salad. My salad involved a lettuce cut into clean quarters and placed on my plate just like that with some decoration. Nice!
So after that we hooked up with the guys from the last night and Thomas and off we went into the wilderness to shoot off a rifle. We can’t shoot for damn, missing bottles, but it was about the experience. Not an experience I care to do any time soon, it was strange to say the least, but all part of our American adventure.
After that we drove down to diablo canyon near the rio grand and wandered up to a cliff. This is the first time for me to climb since indoors at Zurich last autumn, first time ever on a real mountain, and same for alan but maybe he hadn’t climbed in many a year. Fun for sure, scary too, tiring definately, but one hell of a view and great to hang out with some awesome guys.
After, we headed back to jack and katie’s where we all mucked in to cook dinner, other people coming and going, yum and fun.
On to poker, I like to take risks, make it exciting, and got kicked out thrice, great, so shots an later alan won.
Today we gathered our heads together, said our farewells and drive off into the country.
We randomly found Madrid, otherwise known as Mad rid. Once a mining town, then and now a hippy town, but made famous by a john travolta film ‘wild hogs’ it’s super bizarro, eclectic, new age, pretty cool. I tried me some fried green tomatoes on a salad, not bad. Well that was it for Madrid bar a few photos and we drove on, wishing grandpa happy birthday by phone and off yo get lost.
Lunch hadn’t been filling enough so we took a right turn, signed to a diner, toward a ski area. We ended up a mile higher, overlooking Albuquerque, so cool view, bloody cold and had lunch número dos.
Fun fun, now we are outside jessica, not rachael’s place in Albuquerque, our couchsurfing hosts for the next two nights waiting for their return home.

so back in the uk, missing budapest.
the night before, i met jackie, bobby and leslie, and we went with the aussies to deak ter for a couple of beers. it’s worrying how some many young giurls easily look mid twenties, best to nt talk to girls, nahhh.
all evening we were entertained with lightening all around us, with pre storm winds, but no rain, which was lovely. the best part of the storm, minus the wet stuff is great outside in the park. so the aussies and headed off to szimpla. we arrived just in time before the rain, and had a long pint.
it was interesting that we came upon long in depth spiritual conversations, when the previous night none of us probably thought the others were even of such thoughts.
so the thought not necessary now, doesn’t mean that the same will be in the future thought.
so to yesterday morning and tired again i went to the dentist. this timeall went well, lots of chatting, no pain, a bit of dental cement, and i have a new tooth, so all my pearlies look great! (must remember to floss, and not eat trees!!!)
having seen a biker being squished between 2 german cars kinda puts a damper on my ideas of learning to ride a motorbike.
i had a great time couch surfing this past weekend, all in all staying in four places over 5 days, tiring, but great to meet some great people, and just have fun with others, travlling is wonderful
so i flew back, read the newspaper, boring, a car magazine, expensive and unproductive, but had some good music to listen to. wizzair isn’t a bad airline, pretty basic, but not unpleasant like ryanair!
i had a few pints with alan in downtown cambridge, watching posh chavs abuse the punting kids, ate burritos, mmm, and loving the cider.
so today we visited the garage to see my car. it’s in bits, but the guy says wont cost too much to fix. however it wont be ready before monday. so time to chill here at dad’s and get things done.
off to gym with alan now.
i will miss budapest. it was great, beatiful girls, fun parties, cool bars and parks, so sunny. well the sun just makes life so nice, it’s a shame living in the uk people don’t get enough sun, as it makes such a great difference to the happiness you have in life. maybe some pictures later

Around 40 degrees, and I’m wandering around Budapest.
I was fooled into not bringing my flip-flops due to the horrid english weather the day before, but can’t bring myself yo part with £30 for another pair just for here.
I’m staying with bobby a couch surfer, cool guy, well travelled, served in the US military, and totally sound. We went for some drinks with other couch surfers, and I had his nice studio to myself.
Yesterday after the flight I was collected straight from arrivals and delivered to the dentist. Again a very nice surgery, professional, modern, clean, with nice English speaking nurses and dentist British Hungarian Medical Service.
Again with the drills and complications. My implant is very wide for the gap, so he had to do some metal working while at it, sparks flying around, and even managed to break a drill bit! I thought that while having work done, I’d have my teeth whitened a bit, while in a land of lower cost. I would never want to go through that ever again. I had to stay still for way too long. I didn’t too much enjoy the nerves and my gums dancing around under the hydrogen peroxide and ultra-violet light. But after all that, my teeth look nice, yet not scary White like American actors and such people.
They are making me a tooth now, so either Monday or Tuesday I should be whole again, I can’t wait!!!
I’m sat in hero square, a bit hungry, but it’s too hot to so anything. I guess I’ll have to move once I’ve run out of water.

Today I’m couch surfing in Kerry.
Last night, agota, sebastien and I went out. Being that we started after midnight, we weren’t so drunk to dance to the cheese in the club until it was time to leave, so we had our own wake the house mates party, until seven am.
So today has been a little rough.
I said my goodbyes and drove off. It’s slow going on Irish roads, but I got to the gap of dunloe. It’s beauterific! I worry that I got a bit excited and damaged the underside of the car when we flew through the mountains, however much fun was had.
So now it’s rainy, foggy but not too cold, in cahersiveen. I’m staying with ciaran, a couch surfer, not like other couch surfers that I’ve met. He’s mid life, his wife and kids have just left him, he’s Irish, well travelled and has a huge beautiful house by the sea, and grows his own veg. We had great home made dinner, red wine, cool chats, then went to his sister’s pub. Even better, the next pub had an impromptu gathering of music, guitars, harmonica, fiddle…singing. Awesome.
Finally we did the responsible thing and cycled home in the rain, gees, I don’t know whether it was the booze but the km uphill almost killed me.
Well off to sleep to await the next adventures.

Prague is a crazy ass party. Just how I remember it from previous visits.
The hostel was super cheap, full of Aussies. The pool and sauna certainly made all ace.
Last night we went on a pub crawl, organised by a couple from the states. 120 people, drinking games, shots, beer, wicked. Almost all were americans, bit of a culture shock for me, kinda good introduction to what I’ll get after summer. But damn cool, and Christian said it best, “Americans like to get drunk, and fuck”.
So getting drunk in the van, on the way to Berlin, but never take a taxi in Prague!!!

We’re still in krakow, but not for too much longer.
We picked up a new hostel, drank a bottle of vodka, and ventured out into town to meet up with some guys doing an organized bar crawl. We saw a local bar, a rock bar, and ended up in a big club. The night was great, but after ian bought a bottle of vodka in the club, all is a bit hazy for all. Vodka is crazy cheap here. Nights out are crazy cheap. Krakow is an awesome place to party!
Yesterday we took our hangovers to the aquapark. We spent 4 hours riding slides and playing tag. No more hangover, and tired out, wet through, we found this campsite nearby.
The night consisted of wine, vodka and cards.
And I did my first load of washing, for free! Four weeks on the road and I was just about out of clean enough underwear.
Things are going great, and the vam’s about to get even tighter with the arrival of ian’s brother Friday in Prague.
